I'm Alitalia, a learning strategist with 27 years of experience. One question changed how I teach.
The question came from watching my niece work with a tutor after she experienced a stroke. The sessions moved forward. The answers got checked. But there was very little space for her to reason, reflect, or rebuild understanding through her own thinking. I kept asking myself what would change if instruction prioritized thinking instead of quick answers.
That question sent me looking for answers. What I found across 27 years of teaching confirmed it. The students who made the most durable progress weren't the ones who worked the hardest. They were the ones who understood what they were doing and why it was working. They could name their own thinking. They could carry what they learned into something new.
